Item Description
1.25" unlisted in Hake. The back of the button has a tanned back paper with 1/8" hole in a blank area at the top followed by text below "Compliments Of Arcade Picture Parlor Woodburg, N.J./Open 7 To 10 Nightly." Light oxidation on the collet. The front of the piece is a real photo without dot pattern showing a fully jointed plush teddy bear with a large bow around the neck. On the right side is a black oblonged design, added in the photographic process, representing a big stick with the narrow end propped on the bear's leg and the mid point of the stick resting against the bear's arm. There is an 1/8" dark tan age mark at the bottom of the bear's right foot. The rest of the button is totally clean and glossy. Roosevelt publicly first used his 'Big Stick' quotation at the Minneapolis State Fair in September 2, 1901. The Teddy Bear made its appearance in 1903 so quite possibly this button is a novelty piece issued in association with Roosevelt's 1904 campaign. The only example we've seen.
