Item Description
11x14" cardboard poster advertising a concert at "Peace Arch Park, Douglas Sun. May 18 2:30P.M." Union bug from Washington D.C. at bottom center. The International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers requested Robeson sing at their Vancouver convention in February of 1952 but he was unable to attend as his passport was revoked in 1950 because of his outspoken support of communism and his political activism. The union leaders promised to set up a concert on the US-Canada border. This poster advertises that concert held May 18, 1952. Robeson started the show saying to the crowd of 40,000 "I stand here today under great stress because I dare, as do you - all of you, to fight for peace and for a decent life for all men, women and children." The concert was a victory for Robeson who had been blacklisted throughout the US and effectively made a prisoner in his home country during the era of McCarthyism and the red scare. Each corner has area of loss with the largest being a 3/4x1" area at bottom right. Additionally wrinkles and toning along right and left sides with two small horizontal tears at left and a crease through center. Good. Despite condition an important historical artifact that is the first we've seen in 49 years.
