Item Description
Large 16.5x19.5" wooden frame holds high relief hand-painted papier-maché scene titled "The Ghost Story" in raised letters at bottom. 1920s. Scene depicts stereotypical-depicted "Mammy" character telling ghost story to five visibly frightened African-American children, the young boy in front cowering in fear. To go along w/theme, the wooden frame has been hand-painted w/nighttime scene w/two flying skeletons. A version of this plaque is shown on page 109 of "Images In Black: 150 Years Of Black Collectibles." Scattered edge wear to frame, but none too distracting. Relief areas of scene have a few spots of paint flaking, but these are minor and plaque still displays Fine/VF overall. A very interesting piece of Black Americana.
