Item Description
Original 6.25x24.75x4-5/8" deep cardboard box w/lid label featuring image of Superman pulling apart chains at his wrist as opposed to breaking across his chest as typically depicted at the time. Box contains game No. 530 designed by Arthur Dritz and produced by American Toy Works in the early 1940s. © Superman Inc. Box has some scattered edge/corner tip wear w/glue repairs/reinforcements to interior of three lid corners (one w/added archival tape as well). Bottom of box has moderate moistures staining to sides, but aside from slight warp to one main side panel, box retains its shape. VG/Fine overall. Lid label shows some scattered wear w/5/8" tear at upper right and some creases. Bottom center has some minor red color touch-up to area affected by surface paper loss from tape removal. Despite this wear, label is still bright and glossy w/vibrant color and displays Fine. Game consists of 4.5x10" painted wood base w/attached 7.75" tall arms that support 24" long wooden board w/attached die-cut cardboard piece attached to front to give it the appearance of a bridge. This board holds four 3.5" long wooden blocks w/slots containing die-cut cardboard armored cars and tanks (two of each, w/different colors and point values. Front of toy features nearly 8" tall die-cut cardboard piece w/wonderfully illustrated image depicting full body image of Superman, as he is supporting the bridge. Bottom of this piece has "Superman Action Game" name as well as "No. 530" and game designer/maker names. During play bridge would rock back and forth to expose another tank/car when one was shot off. Game is missing a generic black metal gun and two darts, both or which are easily replaced. Game shows just the lightest trace of wear w/very minor crease at Superman's head which is only noticeable upon close inspection and mentioned for accuracy. VF/Exc. w/bright color. One of the best designed, rarest and most sought after of all Superman toys. First we've offered in our 49 years. Franco Toscanini Collection.
