Item Description
Titled "Mouseart" (on the reverse), this is a large 3x4' canvas executed in acrylic paint as well as collage material taken from an original early 1930s copy of the "Mickey Mouse Movie Stories" book which reprinted images from some of Mickey's earliest cartoons. Paper is covered in acrylic varnish so it is as permanent as the paint. This art was exhibited in early 1991 at "The OK Harris Gallery" (priced at $5,600), owned by Ivan Karp and one of New York's most prestigious and influential galleries. For the show, Fawcett created a series of paintings featuring comic characters such as Felix the Cat, Popeye and Mickey Mouse. His technique was to move an original image on a laser copying machine to create strange, but natural, distortions. He then focused on an interesting  area and hand-painted it in acrylics using eye-catching chromatic colors that visually glow and vibrate as well as undergoing constant changes determined by the natural or artificial light that falls upon the canvas. Visit www.melbirnkrant.com for much more history on Fawcett, his artistic evolution and techniques as well as many images of Fawcett paintings in the Birnkrant Collection. On the Birnkrant homepage, click on Greetings From Mouse Heaven and scroll to the last full row to click on the fourth "John Fawcett" image. Fawcett taught graphic design at the University of Connecticut for 32 years and now runs Fawcett's Antique Toy Museum in Waldoboro, ME. Art is signed John S. Fawcett 51 on front lower right as well as across the reverse top edge of the canvas. "51" refers to Fawcett's age when he created the art. This piece was acquired by Ted Hake in 1991 directly from the artist and comes with Hake's COA. Condition is Mint as made. Two of Fawcett's paintings are featured in the book "The Art Of Mickey Mouse" edited by Craig Yoe and Janet Morra-Yoe. The book, subtitled "Artists Interpret The World's Favorite Mouse" also includes Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Maurice Sendak, Robert Crumb, Rick Griffin, Sir Edward Paolozzi (see poster, item #0000) and many others.
