Item Description
4-3/8x5.5x2" deep solid cast bronze bookends w/felt pads on undersides. Raised text on back of each reading "Dantes And Beatrice - © Pompeian Bronze Co. 1928." Arts and Crafts style w/stylized flowers, stepped base and high relief images of the poet Dante Alighieri and his unattainable love Beatrice,  a Florentine woman commonly identified as the principal inspiration for Dante's "Vita Nuova" and often identified w/the Beatrice who appears as a guides in his "Divine Comedy (La Divina Commedia)." Scene at top of Florence and the river Arno bridge where a fleeting chance meeting was fraught w/disappointment as Dante found himself unable to speak to Beatrice. This style is the scarcest of the various sets made depicting the pair. Rich patina but o/w Exc.
