Item Description
First is 7/8" with lightly tanned W&H back paper. Tiniest trace of age on the reverse next to the collet but the front is 100% clean and glossy displaying Mint. Both men are shown with text "Wright Brothers Home Celebration Dayton Ohio June 17-18 1909." After achieving powered flight in 1903 the brothers spent the next few years defending their patents and touring Europe. This button was for their giant welcome home celebration. It comes with equally historic 1.25" button no back paper and fixed horizontal bar pin. Text reads "Aviation Week Jan. 10-20, 1910 Los Angeles, Cal." Pictured is biplane, airship and balloon. Glenn Curtis won the world's first air race in 1909 and with it the right for his country to host the next international air meet which took place in 1910 supported by California business men such as Henry Huntington (who provided street cars for the thousands that came to the race site, as well as William Randolph Hearst who promoted the event in his Los Angeles Examiner and tethered a balloon on the grounds with text on side "It's All In The Examiner.") Forty-three machines were officially entered but only 16 showed up but aviation was such a novelty more than 20,000 packed the stands each day. Two barely seen paint dots on bottom edge of little importance. The button is NM with high gloss. A scarce pair.
