Item Description
2.25x3-3/8x2.5" tall (to top of Cowardly Lion figural lid handle). Die-cast hinged-lid jewelry box w/gilt finish. Among the first Oz novelties, these jewelry boxes were presented to female patrons of the 100th performance of "The Wizard Of Oz" musical, which opened at New York City's Majestic Theatre on Jan. 21, 1903. The cast featured David Montgomery, Fred Stone, Anna Laughlin, Arthur Hill, Bessie Wynn and Grace Kimball. The musical was produced by Fred Hamlin w/music by Paul Tietjens. Underside of box has raised "Majestic Theatre - 100th Performance - Wizard Of Oz - Wednesday April 15, 1903" text and features "JB 827" maker's mark. This musical was the longest-running show of the decade, w/293 performances. We have found evidence via the example in the Library of Congress that these boxes were lined w/red velvet, but this example features a lt. pink fabric bordered by matching braid. Bottom portion of interior shows heavy wear w/majority of fabric missing and lt. scattered wear to material on underside of lid. Lid features figural Cowardly Lion handle. Lid and raised portions of main sides have darkened slightly w/age. Underside retains bright gilt luster. Undersides of feet and raised edges/corners shows some wear. Fine/VF overall. Rare. We have only offered one other example of this jewelry box (w/o lining material) in our 49 years, which sold for $3,478. An outstanding Oz rarity.
