Item Description
12.25x21-3/8" poster for three-day concert event held June 16-18, 1967 at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, CA. Crowd estimates for the festival ranged from 50,000-90,000 people, who congregated in and around the festival grounds to see the first major American appearances by Jimi Hendrix (where he lit his guitar on fire), The Who and Ravi Shankar as well as the first large-scale public performance by Janis Joplin and the introduction of Otis Redding to a large, predominantly white audience. Embodying the theme of California as a counter-culture focal point, this festival is regarded as one of the beginnings of the "Summer of Love" in 1967 and became the template for future music festivals, notably the Woodstock Festival two years later. Poster features stunning reflective foil design that incorporates photo image of Mata Hari-like performer wearing necktie w/Pan character/mascot of the festival. Poster shows obvious wear w/handling creases, .75" corner off lower right and aged tape/adhesive strips on reverse of three corners. Pinhole at top center. Poster also has aged tape residue along majority of margin w/flaking of delicate foil coating stock. This is most noticeable in .75" area at lower left, 1/8x1.25" streak along bottom center and .25x.75" streak along mid right margin. Good.
