Item Description
22x29.75". Featuring bust portraits of Douglass at center flanked by "Ex-Senator Bruce" and "Ex-Senator Revels." At center top an eagle is perched on a series of draped American flags that contain oval portraits of Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield and Ulysses Grant. At bottom center is an oval portrait of John Brown encompassed by laurel wreath. Perhaps the most spectacular part of this piece are the four vignettes of African American life through the years. At top left a depiction of slaves in a cotton field; bottom left a scene of celebration captioned "Receiving The News Of The Emancipation"; bottom right an African American teacher reads to a classroom of students w/caption "Studying The Lesson" and at top right a Civil War scene w/African American troops. Professional restoration to fill in 2" area around border performed by archivist of the highest caliber. The finely detailed airbrush work is only noticeable upon close inspection and when framed and hung this piece will display beautifully. De-acidified and ready for framing and display. Only three examples known to us w/all having restoration or in need of conservation. One example is locked away in a private collection and the other two are property of institutions so the present example represents a very rare opportunity to obtain a striking example of this rare image.
