Item Description
1.5". This group was founded by Earnest 'Chilly Willy' Thomas and Frederick Douglass Kirkpatrick at the end of 1964 w/the intent to protect civil rights workers in the deep South where there was often a lack of support by state and federal authorities. The Deacons provided security during the James Meredith March Against Fear after the urging of Stokely Carmichael led organizers to relax their commitment to non-violence to prevent scenes similar to the chaotic mob violence seen during the Freedom Rides. Surface wear consistent w/light use. Exc. displaying Mint. A scarce artifact from one of the very earliest militant civil rights groups often forgotten to history.
