Item Description
First is DeWitt 1864-2 in copper. 1-5/16" dia. Front has high relief bust along with his name while on the raised shoulder edge is tiny text naming the die-sinker "Lovett" of New York. Reverse has wreath design and shows implements of war including a drum, quiver, helmet, shield and flag. The inscription in Latin reads "Nec Querere/Nec Spernere/Honorem." DeWitt notes this was originally a Civil War medal and that it also received distribution during the 1864 Presidential campaign. NM. Next is 1-1/8" in brass w/portrait, name and the date on the obverse. Typically the reverse shows a gun boat w/text "Monitor 1862" but this is a variety with three large letters spelling out the name "KEY" and the individual letters are inscribed "Ornamental/Medal & Seal/Die Sinkers/& C./329 Arch St/Phila." This is all against a field holding 33 stars. Exc. and with much original luster. Don & Mildred Wright Collection.
