Item Description
1-11/16" tall beautiful real photo oval in sepia. Concave tin back has stamp of maker Pin-Lock, Chicago and horizontal bar pin. Button is circa 1896 and that was ten years after she joined Buffalo Bill in 1886 at age 15. She was billed as the "Champion California Huntress" and was a direct rival to Annie Oakley in the show. Smith was a braggert and at one point declared "Annie Oakley Was Done For." Oakley who was a very conservative dresser was the opposite of Smith who enjoyed flashy clothing, as demonstrated on this button and had a reputation as a flirt. Smith left Buffalo Bill in 1889 and we don't know what she occupied herself with during the next few years but in 1907 she moved to Oklahoma and joined the Miller Bros 101 Ranch Wild West Show where she performed as Princess Wenona, a fictional Sioux princess. This is the only example we have ever seen and condition is NM displaying Mint. Also see Geronimo on rolled penny #641.
