Item Description
Topo Gigio was the lead character of a children's puppet show on Italian and Spanish TV in the early 1960s. The character, created in 1958 by artist Maria Perego, debuted on Italian TV in 1959. The character became a worldwide sensation after recurring appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" starting in 1963. Original cardboard box w/illustrated lid contains 11.5" long tin litho friction car w/plated bumpers, grille, taillights and windshield frame. Made in Japan by Marusan for the Japanese market, 1960s. © Maria Perego. Box features Topo Gigio's girlfriend Rosie as well as cartoon image of Topo himself. Lid has slight fade w/creases at left/right ends and corner tip wear. Tape repairs at each corner of lid and box bottom has had cardboard reinforcement added to three interior corners/one end panel as well as side panel. VG. Tin litho car in 1959 Chevrolet style w/detailed dash and tin litho Topo driver w/soft vinyl head w/rooted hair and whiskers. Car has four lithographed illustrations of Topo as well as heavily aged small paper sticker w/his image on back deck. Rosie is pictured on tin litho TV screen in back seat. Car has smooth working friction. front grille and bumpers show lt aging, rest of car has a few tiny paint nicks/scratches. VF/Exc. overall. Wonderful design and depiction of this iconic 1960s TV character. Rare.
