Item Description
Nick Carter began as a dime novel private detective in 1886 and has appeared in a variety of formats over the years. In the 1930s, due to the success of "The Shadow" and "Doc Savage," Street & Smith revived Carter in pulp magazine format that was published 1933-1936. Given the character's history, he is sometimes referred to as the grandfather of superheroes. Offered here is 1" tall silver luster "Nick Carter Club" badge w/"7136" membership number. This is version w/bar pin on reverse (also produced w/stud back). Issued by "Nick Carter Detective Magazine" pulp, c. 1934. Full luster, NM. This comes w/2.75x5-1/8" card that held the badge. Issued by Street & Smith, publishers of "Nick Carter Detective Magazine" pulp in 1934. Card features text promoting the Nick Carter pulp and has slightly larger than lifesize image of the badge w/die-cut hole at center (for stud back variety) as made w/hole above/below w/small tears. Card also has handling wear w/creases and is Fine overall. Comes w/original mailing envelope that same lightly larger than lifesize badge image from card as return address. Inked recipient name/address. Scattered wear from mailing w/1.75" split to end flap. VG/Fine. Both the card and envelope are very rare.
