Item Description
Centaur Publications (also known as Centaur Comics) was one of the earliest American comic book publishers. During their short existence (1938-1942), they created several colorful characters, including Bill Everett's Amazing Man. Centaur developed primarily from the Comics Magazine Company, Inc. That company's flagship title - "Comics Magazine" - premiered w/a May 1936 cover date and featured the first masked hero in American comics - The Clock - in Nov. 1936. In Sept. 1937, Ultem acquired Comics Magazine Company's title and Ultem was in turn bought by Centaur Publications, Inc. This formed the base of Centaur Comics, which began publishing in March 1938. Due primarily to poor distribution, Centaur ceased publication four years later. Offered here is a 1.25" dia. pinback button issued to retailer's to promote Centaur titles in 1938. "Circulation Club" text at center is flanked by the titles of four comics published by Centaur - "Star Comics, Funny Pages, Funny Picture Stories" and "Star Ranger." Complete w/backpaper from lesser known Offset Gravure Corporation of New York City. Glossy and NM. Very rare and first we've seen in our 49 years. A true rarity for the comic book historian.
