Item Description
5.75x8.5" clothbound hardcover edition of "Paper Lion" written by George Plimpton (1927-2003), and American journalist, writer, literary editor, actor and occasional amateur sportsman. Known for his sports writing, Plimpton joined the training camp of the 1963 Detroit Lions on the premise of trying out to be the team's third-string quarterback. Plimpton, then 36 years old, showed how unlikely it would be for an "average" person to succeed as a professional football player. The book is an expanded version of Plimpton's two-part series which appeared in "Sports Illustrated" in Sept. 1964. Cover of book has been signed in black felt tip pen by over 30 members of the 1963 Detroit Lions, including Hall of Famers Lem Barney and Joe Schmidt as well as Alex Karras, Earl Morrall, Milt Plum as well as having been signed twice by Plimpton himself. Full list of signatures available online. Book has fading to spine and front cover (not affecting signatures) and back cover has teeth marks from animal at top/bottom left corners (also not affecting signatures). Interior bw pages show wear w/one page missing. Despite these issues, book is still a unique item obtained by a Lions team member. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
