Item Description
Café Bizarre was a local institution that tenaciously resisted gentrification  and was located just south of the heart of Greenwich Village in New York City. The café was first put on the map during the 1960s as a center for beatniks and radicals and was a favorite hang-out for avant-garde artists, political theorists, philosophers, writers, poets, musicians, actors, playwrights, social reformers and filmmakers. Owned and operated by Rick Allmen, Café Bizarre was one of the places The Velvet Underground first made their presence known in the Greenwich Village music scene, later meeting Andy Warhol there for the first time. Offered here is 14x24" original art showing a young woman walking a cat on a leash outside the main entrance to Café Bizarre. Painted in oils, the café's iconic exterior is well-represented, showcasing the large banner that hung above the café's marquee and featured an eerie woman's face along w/"Greenwich Village - Cafe Bizarre" text. The face is repeated to right of marquee, which lists "Steel Drums, Calypso" and "Carnival" among its attractions. Lower left has painted "Ravi" signature. Some lt. scattered edge wear, but would display Exc. if framed and captures the essence of the Village during this era in a hauntingly beautiful painting.
