Item Description
First is 1.25" button with back paper by Pulver. Shown is the famous comic character Happy Hooligan by Opper. He is seen from the back but yet his head is turned to directly face the viewer. Issued for event with text "Are You Goin' Or Comin'?/To The Shoemaker's Fair Fitzhugh Hall From Feb. 27 To March 4, 05." Next at 1.75" and with W&H paper shows Alphonse & Gaston characters also by Opper, a pair of bumbling Frenchmen with a penchant for politeness. They began in the Hearst newspaper New York Journal in September, 1901 and this button is probably from a year or two later with them used to promote a livestock commission company named "Cox-Jones Com. Co." with offices in "South Omaha/Denver." Last is one of the very few buttons to actually picture the artwork of the famous cartoonist Palmer Cox. This shows one of his Brownie character soldiers with text beneath "June 'Skidoo' 1906." There is no maker name or other text but this is an exact likeness of a Cox character and the button is also probably the first on which the word "Skidoo" appears. All three are rare and NM displaying Mint.
