Item Description
3.5" dia., .75" deep. Likely produced within a few years of 1813. Unusual two sided snuff box featuring a naval battle scene captioned "Comm. Perry Capturing The Whole Of The British Fleet On Lake Erie Sept. 10, 1813". The reverse features a depiction of hand written communication from Perry to Hon. William Jones, Secretary of the Navy and reads in part "It Has Pleased The Almighty To Give To The Armies Of The United States A Signal Victory Over Their Enemies On This Lake." At conclusion is facsimile signature "O. H. Perry." A .25" missing chip at 12 o'clock and two nearly .25" areas of missing surface affecting the image at the extreme edge at 3 and 9 o'clock. Reverse has three less than .25" areas of loss to surface not affecting the text. Overall moderate wear consistent w/light use and age. VG/Fine. A tremendous historical artifact that is among the few period artifacts related to this important naval conquest during the War of 1812.
