Item Description
These, along with the Yellow Kid, are the earliest ever comic character buttons and they were issued during the buttons' inaugural year of 1896. These are titled "Little Pinkies" and the characters seem to be inspired by the already famous Palmer Cox Brownies. Each is 7/8" and in the set of 20, 18 have American Pepsin Gum papers while two have W&H papers. Below these 20 are eight additional and these are the variety used as premiums and with back paper naming "Old Gold Cigarettes." In the set of 20, "Boy Orator" which is a sly reference to William Jennings Bryan the Democratic 1896 candidate, there is a barely seen craze line running on the right side from top to bottom inward about an 1/8". Button remains totally clean and overall the set is extremely fine to Mint with just a couple of very tiny faint tan dots on the buttons picturing Greenie, The Actor, and the Policeman. Also as part of the set is the character "The Colonel" which is a representation of the 1896 Republican candidate McKinley. Button depicting "The Ball Player" is known both with and without a period after his name and this is the version without. Full set of 20 plus eight with the much scarcer back paper variety.
