Item Description
10x12.5" w/wide margins and union bug at lower right. Cartoon of "Candidate Roosevelt" addressing an African American crowd saying "I Believe In The Square Deal Every Time" juxtaposed against the bottom image of Roosevelt saying "I Don't Care How Long And Honorable Any Of Your Records Are. You Are All Discharged. Get Out!" and holding a "1906" dated document reading "To: W. H. Taft Sec. Of War- Your Appeal In Behalf Of The 25th Infantry Is Denied. They Must Be Dishonorably Discharged. President Roosevelt." TR is pointing to a group of four African American soldiers in the bottom illustration each labeled by name on their hat and one saying "He Wont Give Us A Hearing" and another carrying a flag labeled "25th Infantry USA." Printed on extremely thin paper that has moderate overall age toning and 7/8" area around boarder of ghosting. A 1" vertical tear at bottom center, three nearly 2" wide pieces of old tape at top border, a 1.25x5" high area of loss at lower right that does not affect the central image and scattered tiny edge tears and chips. Good. Rare. This was likely issued in 1908 when Sen. Foraker and W. E. B. Du Bois urged African Americans to remember how the Republican administration had treated the members of the 25th Infantry and to register and vote. See previous lot #497 for further history of event. Ted Watts Collection.
