Item Description
1-1/8"x4-5/8" card w/a .75x1.75" stickpin attached. Additional text on card reads "Wear This Pin If You Have No Coal." Reverse has hand written notation "Coal Famine 1902 Paid $12.00 Per Ton For Soft Coal Couldn't Get Anything In Hard Coal." From the Coal Strike Of 1902 when President Teddy Roosevelt intervened helping to form a commission that included former President Grover Cleveland. The commission aimed to provide a "Square Deal" to both sides. Card has a less than .5" vertical tear affecting the "L" in "Coal" otherwise pin holes and moderate creases. Good. Brass shell piece of coal at end of pin retains over 95% of its original black finish. VF. An unusual and rare historical artifact combining labor and presidential politics. Ted Watts Collection.
