Item Description
14x22" silkscreened thin paper poster w/"Union Sign Service" stamp at lower right. Additional text "May 20 Friday 9:00 YCLA Hall 22 E.15 Tickets .50 At Rebel Arts 6E 17St." Splendid modernist graphic of man w/beard and long hair holding an artist pallet and curly haired woman in mask. A very radical image for 1938. Edge tears and chipping around borders w/largest area of loss a 2" triangle at top left corner. Good. None of these edge defects affect the graphics which remain bright and fresh. An outstanding and rare artifact from an important depression era left wing art collective. Rebel Arts was formed in 1934 by students at Rand School For Social Science. The institution was supported by the Workmen's Circle and the Socialist Party. Rebel Arts was known for theatrical productions, drama clubs, a camera club and produced posters, placards and textiles to be used in May Day parades. The group was a starting point for such artists as Fairfield Porter (important representational painter of the 1960s) and Harry Herzog (noted WPA poster and mural artist). See also item #486 and item #501 for examples of textiles. Ted Watts Collection.
