Item Description
11/16" with celluloid which wraps around the reverse outer edge surrounding a tin plate to which is attached a 1.25" stickpin. In 1910 he was given command of one of the first German submarines U-9. Under his command on July 16, 1914 the crew of U-9 reloaded her torpedo tubes while submerged, the first time any submarine had succeeded in doing so. The same year, on September, 22 while patrolling the North Sea the U-9 found a squadron of three outdated British armored cruisers (nicknamed the 'live bait squadron') which had the job of preventing German surface vessels from entering the eastern end of the English Channel. The U-9 fired all six torpedo's, loading, while submerged, and sank all three British ships in less than one hour killing 1,459 British sailors. This ranked as one of the most notable submarine actions of all time. Weddigen died the following year. Rare and Exc.
