Item Description
1-5/8" with some loss of the copper plating from the high areas of his bust and the rim edge but still with vast majority remaining. Obverse has his name, 1844 date, and name of die-cutter "Leonard." On the reverse is a detailed coastal scene with factories belching smoke plus a sailing ship on the water all surrounded by "The Wealth Of A Nation/Is Indicated By Its Industry." DeWitt notes that the original of this medal was struck in white metal and that other metals are restrikes. The restrikes of this and other Clay medals were done between 1844 and the Civil War era. The only example we've seen. VG. Ted Watts Collection.
