Item Description
Each is a 13/16" Buffalo nickel, minted 1913-1938, with the obverse Indian head altered by hand carving the metal. The hobo nickel reached its peak during the early 1930s depression years when large numbers of men were on the road seeking work. Some with time and talent would carve these nickels into works of folk art to be sold or traded for food and shelter. On the first two, the 1913 date still shows. On the first, on the reverse the buffalo's back has a small panel with initials "JC" at the center. Second has clear date of 1915. The profile of the Indian has not been altered,  but the rest of the image is a very smooth surface with depicted hat. Third includes depiction of cigarette in mouth and nickel has small drilled hole at top.  Fourth depicts World War I era German soldier in helmet with chin strap and with partially detailed Maltese cross designs on the collar and helmet. Fifth has very nice facial and hair detailing plus a few extra accent lines on the hat. All are very well executed and Exc. examples.
