Item Description
First is first seen 1.5" with back paper of Uhl Bros., Toledo. We found Jan. 5, 1900 newspaper article titled "Irish To Aid The Boers" reporting news dated Dec. 31, 1899 "The Robert Emmet Club, a leading Irish society of Toledo, has begun a movement to assist the Boers, pledging financial and moral support to the Boers and offering assistance of men if required. 55 volunteers offered their services." It seems most likely this button was issued by this group as a member and/or contributor button. Mint. Second rare button is anti-Boer and pro-British. 7/8" with lightly aged W&H paper from 1900. Wonderful cartoon depicts Piet Cronje, a South African Boer general, in the mouth of the British lion. Cartoon symbolizes Cronje's defeat at the Battle of Paardeberg where he and 4,150 commandos surrendered 2/27/1900 after being enveloped by Lord Roberts (see three following lots). Cello is NM displaying Mint.
