Item Description

Here is an outstanding example of the famous Kellogg's Pep cereal button set that turned millions of post-World War II kids into collectors. Each is a 13/16" litho tin button. These were issued 1945-1946 sealed in a paper or cellophane packet one per specially marked Pep cereal box. There were five sets of 18 buttons each, but Superman was included in each of the five sets so in all there are 86 different characters. However, the Superman button was issued in two distinct varieties and both are included in this set (along with one extra Dick Tracy so there are 88 buttons instead of the usual set of 86). The standard Superman button reads on the curl "Copyright D.C. Inc." On roughly one of every one hundred, the scarce version Superman curl reads "Copy. 1945 Reg. U.S. Pat. Off". Not only are both varieties in this set, but all the buttons are in exceptionally nice condition, each housed in a plastic capsule with removable lid and black foam insert. The capsules are in a pair of glass lid trays each 8x14.5".  We've examined each button and all present so nicely that there are none with obvious visually defects (or dents) that should be upgraded. We grade about eight with a 1/16" paint mark as VF, the other 80 grade Exc., NM or Mint and these are heavy on the NM to Mint range. A high grade set and rarely offered with both Superman varieties.
