Item Description

10-7/8x17" cardboard poster for legendary Aug. 15, 1965 Beatles concert that took place at New York City's Shea Stadium. Poster also announces concerts at Shea by Herman's Hermits, The Dave Clark 5, The Kinks, The Moody Blues and the New York Folk Festival starring Chuck Berry and Johnny Cash. The Aug. 15 concert opened The Beatles' 1965 North American Tour and was the highlight of the group's 1965 tour, w/over 55,600 fans in attendance, the largest Beatles concert up to that time. "Beatlemania" was at its peak at the Shea Concert, causing John Lennon to proclaim "Shea Stadium... I Saw The Top Of The Mountain." Film footage taken at the concert shows many fans crying, screaming and even fainting. The crowd noise was such that security guards were seen covering their ears as the Beatles entered the field. Presented by promoter Sid Bernstein, TV host Ed Sullivan introduced the band as they took the stage: "Now, Ladies And Gentlemen, Honored By Their Country, Decorated By Their Queen, And Loved Here In America, Here Are The Beatles!" The 30 minute, 12 song concert was a milestone in musical history as one of the first major stadium concerts. Poster has noticeable warp due to moisture, which is only evident by area of faint staining at upper left and smaller, darker area of staining at lower left. Lower right has some scattered spotting and end date of New York Folk Festival has .5" area of surface paper lift partially affecting date. Corners show lt. wear and there is a 7" horizontal crease at right in block w/Beatles information. VG overall, but incredibly rare as this was the only poster to advertise the 1965 concert. Only a few examples of this poster are known and as such, they rarely come up for sale.
