Item Description

22x28" thin cardboard poster for WAEB's Gene Kaye Summer Festival of Stars Show and Dance that took place July 25, 1965 at the Allentown Fairgrounds featuring Little Richard, Jay and The Americans, The Chiffons, Sir Douglas Quintet, The Halos, Jimmy Velvet and Little Richard's backing band, The Royal Guards (all of whom are pictured; The Royal Guards shown w/Little Richard) as well as The 4T's, Malcolm & Eddie and Larry Laster (who are not pictured). Poster was printed by Scoop Printing Co., Inc. of New York City. Top right has large paste-over, likely covering additional concert date that was canceled. Poster has moderate edge wear w/a number of small tears as well as corner tip wear w/some scattered surface paper flakes; bottom corner flakes being more noticeable. Poster has some handling creases at floating Little Richard head at upper right. VG overall w/Day-glo colors remaining bright and fresh. Of some note during this 1965 tour Jimi Hendrix served as guitarist in the Royal Guards. Hendrix was fired from the band in July, most likely in the middle of the month during the tours stop in New York after missing the tour bus headed to Washington DC. Hendrix's time with Richards was tumultuous for a variety of reasons including tension over stage wardrobe. Seeing the outfits of the guards at lower right we feel that Hendrix may have had a point. It's hard for us to imagine the guitar legend performing in such a costume but equally challenging to imagine Richard giving up any of the glory on his stage. A truly rare and outstanding artifact of rock 'n roll history that is the only example know to us.
