Item Description

2.25" with metal back and bar pin. Back has union bug plus ink stamp of maker in Bobby Vee's hometown of Fargo, North Dakota "Northern Novelty Co." This button was made very soon after "The Day The Music Died" in Feb. 1959.  Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper all died in a plane crash as they were traveling to a show in Moorhead, MN, near Fargo. The local radio  station issued a plea for fill-in talent. Just the week before, Vee had organized a group of five guys with their style modeled after Holly's, and they volunteered. They were accepted, named themselves The Shadows on the spot and were warmly received by the audience. Vee recorded "Suzie Baby" later in 1959 and this button is of the same vintage as that, his first hit. Essentially Mint. Rare.
