Item Description
The 1980 Summer Olympics, were held in Moscow, Soviet Union and were the first Olympic Games to be staged in Eastern Europe. Led by the US at the insistence of President Jimmy Carter, 65 countries boycotted the games because of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. This prompted the Soviet-led boycott of the 1984 Summer Olympics. Offered here is a tombac participation medal, measuring 2.25" (60mm). Designed by Angelina Leonova, the obverse features the Moscow Olympic emblem set against stadium arena w/Cyrillic inscription. Reverse features a bas-relief of Red Square in Moscow. Minted by the Leningrad Mint. NM. Comes w/velvet-lined presentation case as issued.
