Item Description

Captain Midnight's radio serial debuted Oct. 10, 1938 as a 15 minute program heard five nights a week on 24 mid-west radio stations reaching millions of listeners. This and the items in the following four lots were all preserved in an oversized binder titled on the front "Captain Midnight/America's Sensational Radio Adventure/With Complete Merchandising Plans". This in-house binder, maintained by the Skelly office in Omaha, contained  one example of each of the items sent to Skelly Oil gasoline stations from the start in the Fall of 1938 through the Spring of 1940 when the program sponsorship passed to Ovaltine. Most pieces in this and the following lots are the only examples we've seen and quite possibly most are the only examples still existing. The first item is a 6x9" un-addressed mailer that first opens to 9x12" and then to 12x18". A note in the album titled this "Mailing Piece No. 1" and stated, "This attractive teaser folder was sent to all Skelly Distributors two weeks before the initial broadcast". The folder is designed mostly in black to simulate the darkness of "Midnight" and includes the early logo design of an airplane flying by a tall clock tower plus owl eyes and the repeating word "WHO" next to a tree with sign "Beware! it Will Be Midnight October 10th".  Paper has pair of 1" splits on a fold end and tan glue stain over the blank reverse.  Extremely Fine, historic and rare.
