Item Description
Anna Ladd (1878-1939) created portrait busts, reliefs, symbolic figures, fountains and soldier's monuments. She studied drawing and sculpture w/Bela Pratt and Charles Grafly in Paris and in Rome w/Rodin, Ettore Ferrari and Emilio Gallori. During World War I her husband, Boston physician Maynard Ladd, was in charge of the American Red Cross Hospital near Toul, France and Anna founded the American Red Cross Studio of Portrait Masks to be worn by mutilated soldiers. She worked much of her life in Europe, but also in San Diego from 1936-1938. Ladd executed busts of Anna Pavlova, Ethel Barrymore, a full figure bronze of Charles Lindbergh and the 6.5" tall by 3" dia. heavy bronze bust offered here of Earhart wearing her flight helmet. Incised "A.C. Ladd" signature on the left side near the base. Exc.
