Item Description
This is only the second example we've seen of this button in the 1.25" size rather than typical 7/8" size. It came from the estate of a Whitehead & Hoag saleman in the Pittsburgh area and has the W&H back paper. Issued by the A.F. of L. in support of their members "kidnapped" (actually extradited). On October 1, 1910 an explosion destroyed the printing plant. Blame was placed on John McNamara Sec.-Trea. of the Intl. Assoc. of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers Union (based in Indianapolis) who earlier had sent his brother James and a second man Ortie McManigal to LA to protest anti-union city ordinances. Confronted, McManigal offered to tell all in exchange for immunity. The McNamaras ( in LA) were defended by Clarence Darrow who assumed his clients were headed to death row. However, prosecutors feared the brothers would become martyrs in the labor movement and with the judge's approval the brothers pled guilty to avoid the death penalty.  James admitted placing a dynamite laden suitcase with timer in an alley between the newspaper buildings.  Our one other example exceeded $300.00.  NM .
