Item Description
This set is listed in the Hake/Levin book Buttons In Sets but the set listed is of litho tin whereas this group is comprised of celluloid buttons. The litho set was made by Bastian whereas this cello set was made by Whitehead & Hoag. Each of these has a back paper with the exception of #25. In addition to the W&H name, the text on the back paper reads "Play Button Gum/First Series/Nos. 1 to 30/Wm. J. Wischmann, Inc. Brooklyn, N.Y." The buttons in this group include: 4, 6 (previously unknown but now known to be flag of Brazil), 7, 9-17, 19-22, 24-29. What appears on the #8 button remains unknown so if anyone out there happens to have it we would appreciate the information. These are quite scarce in their litho form and rare in their celluloid form. 22 of 30 in the set all NM to Mint.
