Item Description
This is an outstanding collection of metal badges and ribbon badges with the earliest dated for 1890 going up to about 1927. This fraternal organization was founded in 1875, limited to native born Californians. The group is dedicated to historic preservation and documentation of historic structures and places in the state. In 1890, they placed the first historical marker in the state to honor the discovery of gold and this gave rise to the state nickname "Golden State" and "Golden West." Both President Nixon and Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren were past presidents. In addition to the N.S.G.W. items there is one piece with initials standing for Native Daughters of the Golden West. This is a large and heavy "Sterling" medallion which is suspended from a heavy neck cord. Text at top and bottom reads "1917/1918/Grand President." Beautiful enamel work featuring flags, bear, and orange poppy flowers with green leaves. Reverse is blank except for the "Sterling" mark and name of maker in San Francisco, Pasquale. Many of the N.S.G.W. items also feature enamel work. While most pieces are ribbons or pins there are a few watch fobs and/or watch chain charms. A few of these pieces are quite possibly with gold content and we have not tested them. Some minor age traces on a couple of the pieces but overall all are at least in Fine condition and vast majority are VF to NM. An outstanding collection with the majority of the pieces dated between 1890-1910.
