Item Description
The first four in this group were the creation of Dixon Gayer in response to the John Birch Society created by Robert Welch. Dixon Gayer thought the politics of 1960s Orange County, CA  cried out for a voice of moderation. So he invented one. Gayer was an admittedly liberal columnist writing in conservative Orange County when the ultraconservative John Birch Society was a political force in the region. He created the Webster Quimmley Society, named for a fictitious hero whose motto was "Sanity and Freedom". First is a 3.5" business card mounted to a thin sheet of plywood with a brass bar pin held by epoxy on the back. VF. Largest button is 2-3/16". This has very light hairline scratches on upper right seen only in reflected light. VF. The two 1.25" slogan buttons are the first we've seen. NM.  The "John Birch Is Dead" has dark spots. VG. The "Tao Chu Kwang" text refers to the man who supposedly killed John Birch. This has edge dot plus lower half is dented. Fine. The four Quimmley items are all scarce. Ted Watts Collection.
