Item Description
15-5/8x20-5/8" framed w/ 7-1/2x8-1/4" letter mounted in presentation. Letter has "Department Of State" at top right. Body of the letter is written in an unknown hand and responds to a request for "Funds For The Relief Of Destitute Seamen" and notes that "Mr. Smith Has Been Authorized And Instructed By This Department To Furnish You With Any Sum Through The Banks Of The United States In London, Not Exceeding Dollars 2222- 22/100 (2500 Sterling) Which You May Require Of Him And I Flatter Myself That This Amount Will Be Sufficient For The Present." Signed boldly at conclusion "J. Q. Adams." An oval etching of Adams is included in the display and has minor age toning at bottom center, Fine. Letter has a vertical and two horizontal folds that are well flattened and is otherwise very clean and displays VF. Comes w/Hake's COA and JSA/LOA. Leon Rowe Collection.
