Item Description
9.5x11.75" hardcover w/112 full color pages featuring art by Louis Biedermann. Book comes w/original dust jacket. Published by The World Today Inc. 1926. DJ shows various comic character portraits including Maggie and Jiggs, Barney Google, Spark Plug, Happy Hooligan, Krazy Kat, Ignatz, Offissa Pupp, Mama Katzenjammer, Der Captain, Hans and Fritz, Felix the Cat, a pre-Popeye Olive Oyl, her brother Castor Oyl and Olive's pre-Popeye beau Ham Gravy. DJ is clipped and worn w/archival tape repair on interior to edge tears and replaced piece at top of spine, but this is mostly black bkg. portion. VG overall w/strong color. A very rare DJ, only the third example we've offered in our 50 years. Book has full color front cover appliqué showing race scene w/Barney Google on Spark Plug and Jiggs on Maud the Mule surrounded by a multitude of characters. Contents include 51 characters shown including those mentioned on DJ as well as Tillie the Toiler, Rudy and Maud, Toots, Casper, The Newlyweds and others. Book is a high grade copy w/Exc. cover and NM contents. Comes w/separate 4.5x7" promotional bookplate that reads "All The Funny Folks In This Book Appear Every Day In The Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph And Every Sunday In The Sunday Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph." Gummed back has some residue and bookplate is evenly aged w/some lt. handling wear. VF overall. Rare and first we've seen in our 50 years. One of the all time great comic character books.
