Item Description
"It's A Bird... It's A Plane... It's Superman" is a musical, w/music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams. Based on the comic book character Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics, the musical was first performed on Broadway in 1966 and received generally positive reviews, but it failed to catch on w/the theater-going public and closed on July 17, 1966 after 129 performances. The musical received three Tony Award nominations. Offered here is an extensive lot of ephemera related to the 1966 production (w/exception of 1967 Starlight Theatre program), including large 7" dia. pinback button w/blank-face Superman image that lists WABC 77 TV channel. Button shows moderate wear, w/some small spots of staining along edge of bottom half as well as .75" and 1.25" impression lines between Superman's legs. Button is Fine. 16-page Souvenir Program has photos, cast biographies and back cover has photo cut-outs of the cast. Other items include handbill, program and "Playbill" magazine for Alvin Theatre, two song folios ("You've Got Possibilities" and "It's Superman") as well as aforementioned Starlight Theatre program and Jan. 15, 1966 issue of "Cue" magazine. Both Starlight and Cue are scarce publications that saw limited distribution. Varying degrees of handling wear, most are Fine to Exc. Franco Toscanini Collection.
