Item Description
George Dewey (1837-1917) was Admiral of the Navy, the only person in US history to have attained the rank. Admiral Dewey is best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. Offered here is 12.5x14.75" vellum certificate for "The Society Of Manila Bay" dated May 1, 1898 in which then Commodore (Dewey was promoted to Rear Admiral in May 1898) welcomes 1st Lieutenant (USMC) Thomas Conrad Treadwell (who was a Major at the time of the battle) to The Society of Manila Bay, a society of veterans of the Battle of Manila Bay formed "For The Purpose Of Perpetuating The Memories Of The Battle, An Keeping In Full Strength The Ties Of Fellowship And Loyalty Then And There Established By Honorable And Triumphant Service." The ship Treadwell served upon - USS Raleigh - is noted below his name. Top center has image of both sides of the Battle of Manila Bay Medal (commonly called the Dewey Medal) and bottom center shows Dewey's flagship the USS Olympia. Dewey has boldly signed lower right in black ink. Lower left has embossed gold foil seal w/ribbons. This shows scattered wear w/some flaking. Certificate has been folded into sixths but still displays VF; Dewey's signature displaying Exc. These signed documents rarely come up for auction, though a similar signed certificate (posthumously awarded to USS Olympia's captain Charles Vernon Gridley sold in 2016 for $2,991. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
