Item Description
8.5x11" thin paper handbill/flyer advertising concerts in Sept. and Oct. of 1961 including "Greenbriar Boys With The Sensational Bob Dylan." It was during this stint at New York's epicenter of folk music, on Sept. 29, that New York Times reviewer Robert Shelton wrote "A Bright New Face In Folk Music Is Appearing At Gerdes Folk City. Although Only 20 Years Old, Bob Dylan Is One Of The Most Distinctive Stylists To Play In A Manhattan Cabaret In Months" a review that set Dylan on the path of legendary superstardom he never looked back from. The event was only Dylan's second professional gig having opened for John Lee Hooker, also at Gerges, in April and having been in New York for less than a year. In that time Dylan had made a host of friends including the legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie. On Sundays in Feb. and March Dylan would visit Guthrie at Bob & Sig Gleason's residence in East Orange, NJ. It was here that Logan English first heard Dylan after Guthrie requested Dylan "Play Something." English invited Dylan to play at Gerdes and the rest as they say is history. Also included in this lot are; handbill advertising events in March including "Roosevelt Skyes 'Powerful Blues Man From Chicago'" (loss at top right and scattered insect holes that do not affect text, Good) and an unfolded table tent reading in part "Welcome To Gerdes Folk City New York's Center Of Folk Music" (light age toning at edges otherwise Exc.). Dylan handbill has only three horizontal folds from mailing and age toning that is most noticeable on reverse. VF. An important early artifact of the legendary singer songwriters career.
