Item Description
Original 5-3/8x7-1/8" cardboard mat contains original Stevengraph (pictures woven from silk, originally created by Thomas Stevens in the 19th Century) of English bare-knuckle boxer in classic 19th Century pugilistic pose w/red and white English sash about his waist. One of a series of four of famous bare-knuckle fighters of the period produced by Stevens in 1888. Smith was Heavyweight Champion of England in the late 19th century and into the early 20th century. Printed text on mat below Stevengraph reads "Woven In Pure Silk By T. Stevens, Coventry." Back has complete printed label, noting several other Stevengraph series, including sports and English royalty (including Queen Victoria). Both label and mat show aging and are Fine overall, but Stevengraph remains clean and Exc.
