Item Description
2.25" button with metal back and bar pin. Minor loss of silver flashing from the reverse. Front text is "The Americans Are Coming/The Tide Is Turning". NM displaying Mint. In the early years of the war Franklin Roosevelt overrode his military brass to affect his preference for American landings in North Africa. This move totally surprised Hitler and turned the tide of the war. This plan was known as the Torch Invasion. Secretary Stimson congratulated General Marshall telling him that "Torch" was the most difficult and complex and large expeditionary plan that the United States had ever undertaken in its history. As evidenced by the slogan on this button, there was one simple, clear and symbolic message that the invasion would send across the world 'The Americans Are Coming'. The invasion of French North Africa began November 8, 1942 and this button was used for home front purposes shortly thereafter. Only example we've seen. Very bottom edge has short hairline streak with a little metal backing showing through the button paper. Super bright and clean. Overall Exc. Rare.
