Item Description
Albert C. Barnes (1872-1951) was a noted art collector, whose collection included Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse and Picasso among others as well as African, Chinese, Greek and Native American art. Lot includes first edition (1939) of Barnes and Violette De Mazia's "The Art Of Cézanne" (which features 171 illustrations) and has been signed on inside on frontispiece in black ink, inscribed "To Arthur Cowan, With Best Wishes - Albert C. Barnes - 1 Mar 1945." Book has bookplate inside front cover w/matching name for recipient and does not include dust jacket. Spine has aged. VF overall. Comes w/two 8.5x11" sets of typed correspondence on "Albert C. Barnes - Merion, PA." letterhead. Both are addressed to Cowan, whom Barnes inscribed/signed his book to. First is dated March 22, 1945 and notes Barnes' testimony in a court case and how he annoyed the judge by applying art theory to the judge's question. He also included a transcript of the trial notes. Second is dated March 27, 1945 and continues the story of the annoyed judge. Both have been signed in black ink and folded as mailed. Both have paper clip oxidation to first page. Fine overall. A very interesting and unique lot. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOAs.
