Item Description
2.25" w/metal back and horizontal bar pin. Scattered and faint light brown spots consistent w/the only other example we have encountered. VF. Dixon and Yates were the Presidents of Middle South Utilities and Southern Company who were contracted to build facilities that would feed additional power into the Tennessee Valley Authority allowing the TVA to meet the growing demands of the city of Memphis and increases predicted by the Atomic Energy Commission. This private group being contracted was a major political controversy at the time w/Tenn. Gov. Frank G. Clement at one point naming "Nixon, Dixon and Yates" and suggesting the three were implicit in the "Lowering Of The American Standard Of Public Morals." While Nixon was not directly connected to the power deal Clement made the royal comparison between the methods employed in the Dixon-Yates contract and those utilized by the Vice President during Congressional campaigns. Eisenhower eventually ordered the contract canceled but in the meantime this button was produced. To illustrate the cultural awareness of this political scandal we note that jazz legends Paul Chambers and John Coltrane recorded a song called "Nixon, Dixon And Yates Blues." An unusual and scarce artifact. Ron Koot Collection.
