Item Description
19-1/8x24-1/8" sheet of paper has pen and ink original art for cartoon by Lucius Curtis "Lute" Pease Jr. (1869-1963), an American editorial cartoonist and journalist. He was cartoonist for the "Newark Evening News" from 1914 to 1954 and received the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning. Art features blacksmith wearing "World League To Enforce Peace" (an American organization established in 1915 by citizens concerned by the outbreak of World War I in Europe to promote the formation of an international body for world peace) apron while holding bundle of swords, which are marked "Selfish Aggression" and beating them in single blade, marked "Right." Upper left has hand-lettered sign featuring text from Woodrow Wilson's address at League to Enforce Peace banquet. Pease has signed at lower left. Back of sheet has preliminary pencil for different cartoon. Paper is evenly aged w/obvious margin wear including corner tips off (1.5x2.75" piece off lower left) and scattered margin chips and small tears. 4" tear along upper left. Some tape staining/aged tape repairs on back. Bottom center has 2.75" tear. Good/VG overall, but art remains clean and would make for nice display if framed.
