Item Description
8x13" glazed cotton flag professionally framed to 13.75x18.5". Listed in Herb Collins' Threads Of History as item #306. Collins lists only three Douglas portrait flags, compared to six Lincoln portrait flags, in his renowned text. Forty four stars decoratively arranged in the shape of a shield medallion encircle an oval featuring a striking portrait of Douglas, the Northern Democratic candidate in 1860. Overprinted in the striped field is text "For President, Stephen A. Douglas, Vice President, Herschel V. Johnson." This piece was part of a legendary small find of political flags being used to back a quilt that appeared at auction in the 1980s. This utilitarian action taken by a thrifty quilter over a century ago ensured that the group was preserved in remarkable condition. The present example is a superior one displaying only extremely faint age toning and remaining Exc. The glazed cotton retains its original sheen. An example of this flag resides in the collection of the National Museum Of American History and the Smithsonian Institute and we are aware of less than six additional examples in the hands of collectors. An outstanding opportunity to obtain a truly investment grade political textile of the highest order.
